Mi Primo Vinny


An update: my Spanish lessons remain humbling, but one year in, it must be said that my tutor excels at her craft (my tenuous grasp on past tense conjugation is entirely on me). I would never be able to feign the interest required to lead two 50-minute conversation classes with someone each week; she is an elite conversationalist and a true connoisseur of the follow-up question. She is also (a) Colombian and (b) 10 years younger than I am, which often puts me in the position of having to explain—with a vocabulary I will generously refer to as “limited”—some small piece of American culture I’ve offhandedly referenced, which she has then seized upon as opportunity to keep the momentum going: “No lo sé, ¿qué es?”…
